Recent test data show an alarming trend of declining student performance. Since 2015, Oregon students have taken the Smarter Balanced test each Spring. Developed by professors, curriculum experts, and employers, the test measures whether students are on track for success after graduation.
Results show that Oregon students are failing to reach educational benchmarks:
Statewide Proficiency Grades 3 – 12:
Only 39% in math
Only 53% in reading and writing
This year in a dismal picture of our schools’ failure. Scores for grades 3-12 combined dropped 1% in reading and writing and 2% in math. The lowest measured scores yet.
In the Portland School District the results are even more grim. Shockingly, only 30% of white and low-income students achieved grade level reading and writing proficiency.
According to The Oregonian, school district officials admitted to selecting sub-par reading and writing curriculum that “some teachers barely used”. The Oregonian noted:
“Portland’s chief academic officer said parents in Portland and other districts whose children show…low proficiency want to know “What now?”
